Science Writing

Faculty/Time/Location: Grimsley, Jim; M, 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.; TBA; MAX: 5 (SAME AS ENG 379SRWR 00P, BIO 470S 00P)

Content: This course will provide an introduction to three kinds of science writing, including the science essay, science journalism, and science fiction. One four-unit section on each topic will be taught. Students will create short pieces of writing in each of these areas. Jim Grimsley will serve as the overall instructor and will teach the science fiction section; Sheila Tefft will teach the journalism section; and Pat Marsteller will teach the science essay section.

Texts: Ideas Into Words: Mastering the Craft of Science Writing, Elise Hancock; Writing About Science, second edition, Elizabeth C. Bowen, Beverly Schneller, eds.

Particulars: Permission of the Journalism Program required. Students should budget for photocopying. Students are required to attend on-campus readings and colloquia sponsored by the Creative Writing Program outside of class time.
