Perspectives on Addiction
Faculty Seminar, Fall 2000This interdisciplinary faculty seminar is co-sponsored by the Emory College Program in Science & Society, the Rollins School of Public Health, and the Center for the Study of Health, Culture, and Society. The group will be led by Howard Kushner, Robertson Distinguished Professor of Science & Society, Jim Curran, Dean of the School of Public Health, and Randy Packard, Director of the Center for the Study of Health, Culture, and Society.
The seminar will meet 8:30-10am, with breakfast provided, seven Fridays in both the Fall and Spring semesters and will be organized as follows:
A. Fall Semester: the Nature of Addiction
We will examine examples of emerging categories of addiction (such as sexual addiction, gambling, and shopping) in the context of four perspectives on addiction. Each of these perspectives, historical, biological, cultural, and psychological, will be presented by an invited expert, setting the stage for a (re)examination of the nature of more traditional categories of addiction in the Spring semester:
1. What is addiction? and introductions
2. History of addiction
3. Biochemistry/biology of addiction
4. Culture of addiction
5. Psychology of addiction
6. Summary of sessionsB. Spring Semester: Substance Abuse
We will spend the first five sessions of this semester looking at specific substance abuse (alcohol, nicotine, heroin, caffeine, prescription drugs) from the four perspectives developed in the Fall semester, and then close with a summary session that will lead into our closing symposium.C. Symposium:
We will hold a two-day symposium on addiction in the last quarter of the Spring semester. The exact format of the symposium will evolve as the seminar develops; it will involve at least one major public event as well as smaller-group sessions that explore the yearís work.
D. Public Lectures
Each guest speaker from off-campus will also deliver a public lecture open to the general Emory community. The time and date of these are listed in the syllabus below.
